Classified Staff to University Staff

Classified staff are employees who began state employment prior to July 1, 2006, when the Restructured Higher Education Finance and Administrative Operations Act became effective. Classified employees are covered by the Virginia Personnel Act and State of Virginia Human Resource policies, which are administered by the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management.

Employees in classified roles may wish to convert to university staff. In order to begin the conversion process, follow the procedure below. Visit the compensation site for more information on converting from classified to university staff.

• Contact the HR Service Center and request to convert from classified to university staff
• The service center will send you a form that you and your HR representative will need to complete
