Optional Benefits Enrollment

During open enrollment, Virginia Tech employees are given the opportunity to enroll in Aflac or Legal Resources or make a change to these benefits without a qualifying event.  Sept. 1 – 30 is the open enrollment period for both Aflac and Legal Resources.

Virginia Tech also offers New York Life and Securian Optional Term Life Insurance. In addition, the Commonwealth of Virginia offers Genworth Long Term Care. Enrollments or changes for these benefits are not restricted to an open enrollment period, but this is a good time to examine options available to you and your family. 

All of these benefits are available to enhance Virginia Tech employees’ benefits package.   Virtual sessions have been scheduled in August and September with vendors to provide you with detailed information on the selections available.

Aflac

Aflac is a supplemental insurance plan that pays cash benefits to help with expenses due to injury or illness. The benefits are pre-determined and paid regardless of any other insurance that an individual may have. Employees choose the policy(ies) that best suit their needs and premiums are payroll deducted.

Legal Resources 

Legal Resources offers protection to employees, spouses, and dependent children (up to age 19 or 23, if enrolled as a full-time student) from paying the high cost of attorney fees associated with everyday life events. Please note that a one-year commitment is required of all enrollees.

New York Life

The Employee Whole Life Program is Guaranteed Issue. The benefits include no medical questions or exams, offered through payroll deduction, coverage available for family members, a lifetime of protection, stays with you if you change jobs or retire, ability to earn dividends, access to cash value through policy loans, and premiums won't increase. Check your eligibility requirements here.

Genworth Voluntary Group Long Term Care

Long term care insurance helps pay for care and service expenses related to a long term care event such as nursing home care or at-home care to assist with bathing, eating or other activities of daily living. Long term care insurance can help you maintain control over the kind of care you receive and where you receive that care. For more information, call Genworth Life toll-free at 866-859-6060 or visit Genworth's website. (note: If you are a state employee in VRS Plan 1, VRS Plan 2 or the Hybrid Retirement Plan you are covered under the VSDP Long-Term Care Plan at no cost to you.)

Securian

Eligible employees may sign up for the Optional Group Life Insurance plan through Securian Financial. There is no open enrollment period for Securian’s term life insurance. Employees can enroll anytime.  If you are enrolling for the first time and it is 31 days or more since your start date, you will be required to submit evidence of insurability.
