Professional development certificate programs are a great way to explore the depth and breadth of a particular subject area. Employees are encouraged to discuss specific career development interests with their supervisor prior to enrolling in a certificate program. Effective beginning the Fall 2019 semester the Administrative Professional Development Program (APDP) is no longer being offered.  Replacement programming for employees with administrative responsibilities is currently under development.  Please continue to check this space and the VT News for future updates and announcements.

The Administrative Professional Development Program (APDP) is open to Virginia Tech classified and university staff in pay bands 2 or 3 who perform a variety of duties including office management, bookkeeping, project management, and supervision of other administrative personnel.

Since 1996, the program has provided an opportunity for professional growth to more than 400 university employees in administrative support roles. Members of the program are able to exchange ideas, while developing and enhancing their skills and abilities. Through the program, participants can gain a better understanding of campus policies, procedures and programs, enhance their supervisory and communication skills, and increase their confidence in carrying out complex roles.

This program is open to all Virginia Tech employees. The program consists of five courses – two core plus three elective courses – designed to help participants develop and refine the core customer service skills necessary for working effectively with both internal and external customers.

Core Requirements:

Elective Requirements: Participants may select from any three professional development workshops that are not core requirements for any other certificate track. The total length of selected elective workshops/seminars completed must total three days to meet the certificate requirements (two half-day workshops may be substituted for one full-day workshop). A list of all currently offered Professional Development certificate electives is available.

This program is open to all Virginia Tech employees and consists of eight courses – two core plus six elective courses.  The program examines leadership through the lenses of transformational leadership and emotional intelligence in order to facilitate the development and enhancement of highly effective leadership competencies and skills.

Core requirements:

Elective Requirements: Participants may select from any six professional development workshops that are not core requirements for any other certificate track. The total length of selected elective workshops/seminars completed must total six days to meet the certificate requirements (two half-day workshops may be substituted for one full-day workshop). A list of all currently offered Professional Development certificate electives is available.

This program is open to all Virginia Tech employees. Learn and develop office software skills by participating in classroom-based training or completing online training modules. Both are available at no cost to university employees.

In addition to learning new skills, employees can demonstrate their expertise by completing one of the following Professional Development software skills certificate programs.

Office Software Skills Certificate (PC) Options:

  • Classroom-based: Complete six full days of classroom-based training, including at least two levels of training in each of two different desktop applications.
  • Online: Complete eight of the pre-approved modules, including at least two levels of training in each of two different desktop applications.
  • Blended learning*: Any combination of eight classroom-based and/or pre-approved modules, including at least two levels of training in each of two different desktop applications.

Office Software Skills Certificate (Mac):  

**To receive credit for modules completed online, employees will need to provide professional development with each respective LinkedIn Learning module’s certificate of completion.

This program is open to all Virginia Tech employees. The program consists of six courses – two core plus four elective courses – designed to provide insight into the critical roles, responsibilities, and expectations involved in successfully coordinating and directing teams to achieve organizational goals.

Core Requirements:

Elective Requirements: Participants may select any four professional development workshops that are not core requirements for any other certificate track. The total length of selected elective workshops/seminars completed must total four days to meet the certificate requirements (two half-day workshops may be substituted for one full-day workshop). A list of all currently offered Professional Development certificate electives is available.

As you work toward completing a certificate program, please note:

  • Elective requirements represent the total number of full-day, half-day, or on-line workshops, and the participant’s supervisor should be involved in the identification and selection of at least one of the elective workshops.
  • All completed elective professional development workshops (including older workshops that are no longer being offered) are eligible for credit toward the certificate program identified by the participant.  
  • Elective workshops applied towards the completion of a specific certificate program cannot be used to meet elective qualifications for multiple certificates.
  • Core requirements for a particular certificate may not be used as an elective requirement for a separate certificate.
