In 2009, Virginia Tech Center for Survey Research distributed the first employee climate survey to 5,449 employees. The survey included two free-form comment sections and 80 multiple choice questions using the following scale: 1-strongly disagree, 2-somewhat disagree, 3-somewhat agree, and 4-strongly agree.
With a 45 percent response rate, approximately 2,468 employees returned the survey including 171 pages of free-form comments. Instructional faculty were not included in the survey.
Based on survey results and comments provided, employees are proud to work for Virginia Tech and generally consider it a good place to work. Employees also recognize that the nation's economic state is having a direct impact on Virginia Tech's financial situation.
