Best practices for effectively managing your team
This training provides an overview of best practices for effective management, including performance management and discipline, effective onboarding, and how to give and receive effective feedback. Questions and conversation are encouraged through this training, which is designed to enable a better understanding of the role and responsibilities in a supervisory position at Virginia Tech. Prior to the training, it is recommended to download the "Best Practices for Effectively Managing Your Team" manual.
Employee Relations 101 Staff Training
This training provides an overview of Employee Relations processes and procedures, including university and DHRM policies that may impact employees throughout their time at Virginia Tech. This training also discusses best practices for effective management and improved employee relations. Topics covered include: performance management, progressive discipline, grievances, workspace conflict, and debunking common employee myths. Questions and conversation are encouraged throughout this training, which is designed to provide a better understanding of employee rights, obligations, and responsibilities as a Virginia Tech Employee.
How to write an effective self-evaluation and set appropriate performance goals
This training provides a brief overview and workshop on writing good self-evaluations and setting appropriate goals for the coming performance plan year. Additionally, the training covers how to handle differences in opinion between employees and their supervisors in regards to performance, how to use the performance evaluation process to create career plan and setting goals, and more. Attendees are welcome to bring a copy of their job description, current performance plan, and a draft of their self-evaluation if there are specific questions or concerns they would like to deal with.
Investing in your future: retirement planning sessions
To encourage employees to plan for their future a variety of retirement planning sessions are held each year to help employees of all ages. Topics range from plan overviews to how to be emotionally prepared for retirement. Information on future sessions will be shared with employees when it becomes available.
Open Enrollment informational meetings
To assist employees in making informed decisions, the Department of Human Resources hosts a series of informational meetings across campus during the open enrollment period. The annual open enrollment period is announced by the state every April.
