Legal Issues For Retirees

Jim Montgomery, a member of the Retirees Association and an attorney who works in the area of estate planning and elder law, will review 25 areas of the law that represent potential challenges, obstacles, and pitfalls that are waiting for us. Issues to be discussed range from loss of driving privileges to loans and gifts for children to reasons for and against trusts to who gets the money -- and much more.

For both events, light refreshments will be served.

AARP Town Hall Meeting on Health Care Reform

 A major goal of the President and leaders of Congress is to enact some form of major health care reform. This would rank among the most significant changes in social policy in our nation’s history affecting Americans of all ages. The legislative process to pass this reform is well underway. This meeting is designed to inform attendees about the key issues in health care reform and allow them to ask questions and express their views on such reform.

Tuesday, May 19 – Noon to 1:30 pm. – Blacksburg Community Center, Patrick Henry Drive. Attendees are invited to bring a brown bag lunch starting at 11:30 a.m. Beverages will be provided.

Invited participants: AARP members, hospital-medical groups, insurance and pharmacy representatives, health care workers from various government agencies, medical schools, and groups such as NARFE, the League of Women Voters, the Interfaith Center and Tech Retiree Association.The general public is welcome as well. Blacksburg AARP members are urged to invite their friends to attend.

Tentative Program

Greetings and introduction of guests, Pledge of Allegiance, invocation, announcements: Paul Smeal, President, Blacksburg AARP 

Introduction of Speaker: Carl McDaniels, Program Chair.

Keynote Address: Bill Kallio, State Director, Virginia AARP on pending health care reform legislation, key issues involved and AARP priorities.

Comments and Questions from the audience.  Explanation of comment/questioning guidelines, Carl McDaniels.  One minute in length for each floor speaker.

Response from the aides of Congressman Boucher, Senators Warner and Webb.
