Atlanta, Detroit, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New York…At first blush, these cities don’t appear to have a great deal in common with Blacksburg. Would it surprise you to learn we have large numbers of recent hires moving from these major cities to work at Virginia Tech?
As someone who moved from Atlanta to Blacksburg eleven weeks ago, it is no surprise to me. If there is a better campus community – anywhere – than the Virginia Tech community, that would be the surprise! Though these wonderful cities have much to offer, we are attracting growing numbers of applicants from major urban areas who appreciate the tremendous quality of life we offer here.
While Virginia Tech employees live and work in locations all over Virginia and beyond, let’s take a look at the reasons recently hired employees give about working at our primary location in Blacksburg:

Hal Irvin has been Virginia Tech's associate vice president for human resources since March 2008.
Before coming to Virginia Tech, Hal worked for 14 years at Georgia Tech. In his last assignment, he served as executive director of organizational development – reporting to the executive vice president for administration and finance and was responsible for employee learning, change management, and internal consulting services. He played a central role in Georgia Tech’s successful efforts to improve administrative services and transform its service culture.
