Frequently Asked Questions About Employment at Virginia Tech

  • How are job openings advertised?

  • Staff and wage job vacancies are advertised for a minimum of five(5) working days through Personnel Services. Faculty vacancies are generally advertised open until filled through the respective department. Each job advertisement includes the title, department, pay range, a brief description of job duties, qualifications and requirements. Any special conditions of employment, such as restricted funding, ending dates, or an alternate work schedule will be stated in the job ad. • How do I apply for employment?
  • You must apply on-line at https://jobs.vt.edu/ to be considered for current staff and wage vacancies. An on-line tutorial with step-by-step instructions is available on this site. Should you need additional assistance with this process, please call or visit Personnel Services.

To apply for faculty positions, review each individual job posting for application instructions. Some postings will require requested materials to be sent directly to the department advertising the vacancy; others may require an on-line faculty application.

Before applying for an advertised vacancy, you should carefully read the job advertisement to be sure that you are interested in and possess the requirements for the job. Be aware of any conditions of employment - such as ending dates, work schedules, etc. - so that you apply only for the positions in which you are really interested.

  • Wage employment: A wage employee is limited to working 1500 hours per 365-day period and is excluded from participating in the state's vacation, retirement, health, and life insurance programs.

Restrictions on Transfers or Promotions: A salaried employee will not be eligible for competitive transfer or promotion outside of the home department until satisfactory completion of the first 6 months of employment.
