Dispute Resolution

Human Resources will advise supervisors and employees on various options for resolving workplace issues. These may include counseling sessions, formal mediation or other alternate dispute resolution sessions, training sessions, coaching sessions, the use of progressive disciplinary procedures under the Standards of Conduct and Performance Policy 1.60, or the formal grievance process. For preliminary assistance, supervisors and employees are encouraged to refer to the

Virginia Tech Classified and University Employee Handbook (DOC | 1MB)

,for Classified and University Staff, the Standards of Conduct and Performance Policy, and the Grievance Procedures web site.

Formal mediation services are available to resolve co-worker conflict as well as employee/supervisor conflict. For additional information or referral, contact the Human Resources Department at (540)231-9331.

Grievances will normally follow the steps outlined below; however, employees should contact Virginia Tech's Human Resources department to confirm the appropriate management steps for their department or work unit, including employees in Virginia Tech's Extension and Agricultural Experiment Units, and other off campus operations. If an employee/grievant reports to a higher level administrator, the management steps may involve the Office of the Provost or the Executive Vice President.
