The state’s benefits program is an integral part of the university's employee compensation package. The benefits team is available to provide one on one consultation with employees who need assistance in any of these areas.

Discounts and Resources

Virginia Tech employees enjoy a total compensation package as well as a multitude of discounts and perks.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Benefitted Virginia Tech employees have the opportunity to take advantage of the savings that come from Flexible Spending Accounts, that allow employees to set aside money each pay period that can be used throughout the plan year to pre-fund anticipated, eligible medical services, medical supplies and dependent care expenses normally not covered by insurance. 


Health insurance is an integral part of Virginia Tech's total compensation package. Additional offered insurance includes Accidental Death and Dismemberment InsuranceLife InsuranceOptional Life Insurance, Voluntary Whole Life Insurance, Aflac, and Long Term Care Insurance

Legal Resources

Legal Resources is an optional benefit program that protects employees, spouses, and dependent children (up to age 19 or 23 if enrolled as a full-time student) from paying the high cost of attorney fees associated with everyday life events. 


Employees who park at a location owned by the university may purchase a parking permit through Parking Services. To purchase a permit with pre–tax dollars, employees must purchase the permit by the start of the fall semester and pay via payroll deduction.

Employees who pay to park in a parking lot/garage not owned by the university are eligible to participate to participate in a program that allows individuals to set aside pre-tax dollars to cover the cost. 


Regular and restricted full-time and part-time salaried staff are covered by the Virginia Retirement System. Faculty employees may participate in the Virginia Retirement System or in an Optional Retirement Plan.

Tuition Assistance

Salaried employees who have been with the university for at least 90 days are eligible to apply for tuition assistance. The program applies to full- and part-time salaried employees who wish to take credit courses at Virginia Tech or other accredited institutions.


Programs like Hokie Wellness and the Employee Assistance Program are available to help enhance employee health and productivity.

Workers Compensation

The Workers Compensation Act provides compensation to an employee for the loss of his or her opportunity to engage in work, when the disability is occasioned by an injury suffered from an accident arising out of and during the course of their employment.
