Securing Banner HRIS

Banner Security

The open style of many office environments at Virginia Tech makes it very important to ensure that confidential personnel and payroll data is secure. If data is not protected, unauthorized persons could obtain access to confidential employee information, including biographic data and social security numbers, or use the Banner system to submit and/or approve fraudulent PAFs or alter timecards on PHAHOUR. Here are some tips for making your office more secure:

  • Store all personnel and payroll information in a secure, confidential environment.
  • Secure by password any personnel or payroll data stored on your computer.
  • Do not leave your work station unattended while you are logged in to Banner.
  • Do not share your user IDs and passwords with other individuals. (Remember - the Banner system provides audit trails of most transactions and records the user ID used to enter or change data, thus making the owner of the ID accountable for any actions taken under their ID.)
