Flexible Work Options at Virginia Tech

Flexible Work Options at Virginia Tech

Flexible work options (FWO) are alternatives to the standard work schedule, or the standard workplace:

  • Alternate schedules include compressed workweek (4 ten-hour days) and non-standard starting and ending times (e.g. 6:30 am to 3:30 pm).
  • Telework involves work from a remote location, usually the employee’s home.

FWO at Virginia Tech require supervisor approval and must not interfere with standard office functions.   FWO are voluntary on the part of eligible employees unless written into the position description.

Benefits of flexible work options may include:

  • More efficient management of space/equipment/parking
  • Expanded hours of operation
  • Opportunities to develop employee management and leadership skills
  • Increased employee  morale, loyalty and job satisfaction
  • Decreased employee distraction, leading to increased productivity
  • Reduced use of leave and sick days
  • Enhanced recruitment and retention
  • Improved employee work/life balance
  • Reduction in commuting costs
  • Increased participation in car/van pools, mass transit or ride share options.
  • Energy savings for  the University
  • Decreased fuel consumption, traffic congestion and other environmental impacts of driving

Additional Support for Employee Telework

On June 10, Governor Kaine Signed an Executive Order directed at improving energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of state government.  Agencies were encouraged to further reduce energy consumption and costs through a variety of methods including support of employee telework.  As well as the related information available through Virginia Tech Work/Life Resources, VT’s Alternative Transportation Program promotes transportation options (e.g. bicycling, walking, vanpooling, carpooling, riding transit) to get to, from, and around campus instead which will reduce environmental impacts.
