The Commonwealth of Virginia has issued a mandate that payment of wages or salaries to employees hired (or rehired) on or after August 1, 2008 must receive payroll payments via an electronic method. This requirement applies to all wage and salaried employees (with limited exceptions) in all state agencies. Limited exceptions to this requirement can be applied to employees receiving only one payment or to students whose only payment is from a federal work study position. Please contact the Payroll Office at 1-5201, prior to granting an exception for direct deposit.
Human Resources is in the process of revising offer letters to reflect this requirement. Hiring departments should begin using the revised version of the offer letters (for all employees) when they become available, in the near future. The revised offer letter should be used for all new (or rehired) employees (faculty, staff, emergency hires, student wage….) with hire date of 8/1/2008 or after. This requirement will be addressed in faculty and staff orientation; however, the hiring department will be instrumental in assisting the University in complying with this mandate for all employees, especially those who do not attend orientation.
Direct deposit is an employee benefit offered by Virginia Tech that allows you to receive payments in a safe, secure and efficient manner by having your funds deposited directly to the bank account of your choice. There is no need to stand in line to pick up a check, or wait for a check to arrive in the mail.
Employees can enroll in Direct Deposit online under the Hokie Team menu of the Hokie SPA (or via MyVT). This new service allows quick and easy enrollment and maintenance of your banking information for direct deposit. Your information will be processed overnight and you will be sent an email to your vt.edu email address confirming your enrollment or change. This service also allows you to enroll in direct deposit for travel and supply reimbursements.
ALL employees are encouraged by the University and the Commonwealth to receive payments via direct deposit. For more information regarding Direct Deposit - http://www.bursar.vt.edu/payroll/
On Campus employees who do not have an established account can use the following link to identify banks in Blacksburg and a list of banks with ATMs on campus - http://www.bursar.vt.edu/students_parents/banking.php. Hiring departments for off-campus locations can suggest convenient local banking options to assist their new employees and students.
Employees are also strongly encouraged to receive their paystubs electronically. Paystubs are also accessed under the Hokie Team menu of the Hokie SPA. (hokiespa.vt.edu).
